High School Seniors all over the country are thinking about their last year of school, leaving their family and friends and going off to college. Parents think about the same things, but as a parent; however they are also thinking about finances, how they are going to pay for their child’s college. That’s were both the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary come into it.

Both organizations have scholarships available to both young people and non-traditional students. We’re going to look at the scholarships available to our senior high school students.

The American Legion Legacy Scholarship is a needs-based scholarship designed to fulfill a financial gap remaining after all federal and state educational grants/scholarships available to an eligible applicant have been utilized.

WHO:

  1. Children of U.S. military members who died while on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001.
  2. Children of post-9/11 veterans having been assigned a combined disability rating of 50 percent or greater by the Department of Veterans Affairs also qualify.

WHAT:

Each needs-based scholarship provides up to $20,000 for children of the fallen, and up to $5,000 for children of the disabled for undergraduate or post-graduate college.

Recipients may reapply for additional annual awards up to six times.

WHEN:

The application deadline is April 1st. Scholarship awards must be used within one year. Winners are announced each May.

The American Legion has 7 scholarships available:

  1. THE AMERICAN LEGION LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP: The American Legion Legacy Scholarship is a needs-based scholarship designed to fulfill a financial gap remaining after all federal and state educational grants/scholarships available to an eligible applicant have been utilized.
  2. THE SAMSUNG AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIP: worldwide electronics leader Samsung endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million to be administered by The American Legion in 1996. Meant to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea's aid during its struggle against communist forces in the Korean War, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program established a series of scholarships derived from interest and other income from the principal amount. As of 2019 the Samsung American Legion Scholarship has awarded more than $6.5 million in college scholarships to 2,266 applicants since its inception in 1996. Scholarship applicants must complete and submit their online application prior to 11:59 (local time) of Day 1 of their respective American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program. 
  3. THE AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL SCHOLARSHIPThe American Legion awards between $22,000 and $25,000 in scholarships to deserving baseball players each year. Each Department Baseball Committee may select a player from its department to receive this scholarship. The American Legion will award several scholarships each year depending on the number of applicants and interest earned from the trust fun Application and testimonial letters must be postmarked to the department headquarters no later than July 15
  4. NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ORATORICAL CONTEST: The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. Since 1938, the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship. Young orators earn some of the most generous college scholarships available to high school students. Over $203,500 in scholarships can be awarded each year. The overall national contest winner gets a $25,000 scholarship. Second place takes home $22,500, and third gets $20,000. Each department (state) winner who is certified into and participates in the national contest’s first round receives a $2,000 scholarship. Those who advance past the first round receive an additional $2,000 scholarship. The American Legion’s National Organization awards the scholarships, which can be used at any college or university in the United States. 
  5. EAGLE SCOUT OF THE YEAR: The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year nomination window is from November 1st to March 1st, annually. Nomination packets must be received by each applicant's respective American Legion Department (state) no later than March 1st. Then each respective American Legion Department (state) Selection Committee will determine the Eagle Scout judged to be the best in their Department (state). The Department (state) will then send that packet, along with a list of the members serving on that Selection Committee, to The American Legion National Headquarters no later than April 1st. The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year will receive a $10,000 scholarship. Three (3) runner-up scholarship awards will be granted in the amount of $2,500 each. 
  6. JUNIOR SHOOTING SPORTS SCHOLARSHIP: The Junior Shooting Sports Scholarship consists of Two Categories:: Precision Winner will receive $5,000 in college scholarships. Sporter: Winner will receive $5,000 in college scholarships These scholarships are provided in part by The American Legion and The Sons of the American Legion. Second place finishers in each category will each receive $1,000 in college scholarships generously provided by The American Legion Auxiliary. Junior Shooting Sports scholarship recipients will be eligible to receive their scholarships upon enrollment to an accredited trade school, college, or university in the United States. All scholarship claims are a two-party check: to the student AND the school.
  7. ANAVICUS SCHOLARSHIP: ANAVICUS (Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada United States) is a unit of ANAVETS – the Canadian veterans organization founded in 1840. The United States charter was presented in 1953 during The American Legion's national convention in St. Louis where the first ANAVICUS meeting was held. There are 1,200 members in ANAVICUS, and all are American Legion past national commanders and other distinguished Legionnaires. ANAVICUS membership is by invitation only, and new members are inducted twice a year at national convention and the Washington Conference. In 1982, the ANAVICUS executive committee voted to establish and fund a memorial to Past National Commander Harry W. Colmery, who authored the original GI Bill. The memorial is located at American Legion National Headquarters in Indianapolis. ANAVICUS also presents nine scholarships a year that are in memory of a distinguished ANAVICUS member. There are 9 different scholarships available under the ANAVICUS "umbrella".
